Huatai Bio Among Drafting Units of New National Standard GB/T 48293-2026 for Determination of Totarol in Oral Care Products

China’s national standard GB/T 48293-2026, Determination of Totarol in oral care products—High performance liquid chromatography method, was officially released on September 28, 2026, and will take effect on April 1, 2027. Shaanxi Huatai Bio Fine Chemical Co., Ltd. is listed as one of the 15 principal drafting units of the standard.

Background. Totarol (CAS 511-15-9) is a naturally occurring diterpene extracted from the heartwood of the Totara tree, and it has attracted growing interest in oral care formulations in recent years. Before this standard was established, no unified method existed for determining totarol content in oral care products. According to the drafting documentation, existing studies mostly relied on GC-MS, which has inherent limitations because of totarol’s high boiling point. The new national standard fills this gap by providing a single, validated HPLC-DAD method with external-standard quantification.

Scope and performance. The method applies to toothpaste, mouthwash, and tooth powder. Samples are dispersed in acetonitrile (with water for toothpaste and powder matrices), ultrasonically extracted, and analyzed on a C18 column. The method detection limit is 3.0 mg/kg and the quantification limit is 10.0 mg/kg. Validation data show recoveries of 92.1%–104.1% with a relative standard deviation below 5% across 10.0–500.0 mg/kg fortification levels. An LC-MS/MS confirmation procedure is included for uncertain results.

Huatai Bio’s role. The standard was proposed and administered by SAC/TC492 (National Technical Committee on Oral Care Products), under the China National Light Industry Council, and was approved as part of the ninth batch of recommended national standard projects in 2024 (Plan No. 20243442-T-607).
